Video on Lifting and Transfer Skills

As people age, some may develop chronic diseases that may affect their ability to perform daily activities, such as getting up from bed, going to bathroom etc. Assistance from family members (or caregivers) may be required and under these situations, safe and proper lifting and transfer skills are particularly important. Use of improper methods may lead to repetitive muscle strain or even result in injury to the caregiver. Proper lifting and transfer techniques can ensure safety of the elders, and protect caregivers’ back and reduce their risk of injury.

To enhance caregivers’ understanding and mastery of proper lifting and transfer skills, the Elderly Health Service of Department of Health has produced a video on "Lifting and Transfer". In the video, physiotherapist will explain and demonstrate the application of the principles of body mechanics and lifting skills to assist elders in changing their postures and body positions effectively under different scenarios. Occupational therapist will also explain how to select suitable furniture and assistive devices for daily living and for lifting and transfer, and introduce the principles of a barrier-free and safe home environment.
