The scale of the problem

Globally, about 5.8 million people die each year as a result of injuries. This accounts for 10% of the world's deaths, 32% more than the number of fatalities that result from malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS combined.

Globally, the number of deaths in 2004 due to injuries were 5,784,000.  Those due to HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria were 4,393,000.
