2020 – December 2019 Report

31 December 2019

In response to Target 2: Reduce harmful use of alcohol under “Towards 2025: Strategy and Action Plan to Prevent and Control Non-communicable Diseases in Hong Kong”, the “Young and Alcohol Free” health talks have been conducted for two consecutive years. This allow more secondary school students to know about alcohol-related harm and say “No” to alcohol.

In this school year, the Department of Health delegated The Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Kowloon (Lok Sin Tong) to conduct “Young and Alcohol Free” Secondary School Student Interactive Health Talk 2019-2020 in different secondary schools all over Hong Kong from October 2019 to July 2020. Many schools applied for the health talk and the response was good. In December 2019, 7 sessions of Interactive Health Talks were successfully conducted with over 1 700 students participated. In each health talk, a registered nurse or a registered social worker from Lok Sin Tong acted as speaker to conduct the health talk of around 45 minutes.

The objectives of the health talk were to let students learn about alcohol-related harms, stay vigilant to industry-driven marketing tactics and say “No” to offers or pressure to drink. This year, video broadcast, “drunk goggles” interactive game, role-play and quiz game were included in the health talks. Students actively participated in each session. The health talk not only increased students’ knowledge on alcohol-related harms, it also let students learn about ways to refuse alcohol.
