30 April 2019

The Department of Health delegated The Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Kowloon to conduct “Young and Alcohol Free” Student Workshops in different secondary schools all over Hong Kong from October 2018 to June 2019. The schools respond enthusiastically for registration. In March & April 2019, 9 sessions of “Young and Alcohol Free” Student Workshops were successfully conducted with around 1 000 students participated. In each workshop, a registered nurse or a registered social worker from Lok Sin Tong act as speaker to conduct the workshop of around 45 minutes.

The objectives of the workshop were to let the students learn about alcohol-related harms and the myths of alcohol drinking, stay vigilant to industry-driven marketing tactics that lure them into the drinking habit and to “Say NO” to offers or pressure to drink. Interactive game sessions and Question and Answer sessions were included in the workshop. The students actively participated. The workshop not only increased student’s knowledge on alcohol-related harms, it also deepened their correct attitude in “Say No to Alcohol” .

In response to Target 2: Reduce harmful use of alcohol under “Towards 2025: Strategy and Action Plan to Prevent and Control Non-communicable Diseases in Hong Kong”, “Young and Alcohol Free” Student Workshops will be conducted continuously in the 2018/19 school year. More secondary school students will know more about “Young and alcohol Free‧Say No to Alcohol” and develop healthy lifestyle to prevent non-communicable diseases.
